E-Commerce Migration • Visual, UX/UI Design

King’s Hawaiian

Graphic Web Designer

July 2020 - March 2021

Process involved:

Photo Editing (Photoshop), User Flows, User Testing, Visual Design, Creative Writing, SEO

King's Hawaiian is a Los Angeles-based family-owned and operated bakery, known for its Hawaiian Sweet bread.

I was brought on to help edit and migrate digital content to their new website, prior to launch. As the project evolved, I conducted a comprehensive UX/UI usability review of their new platform and worked with in-house design, and marketing teams, on user testing, SEO Optimization, and copywriting projects.

The opportunity was to assist a globally recognized brand, learn new skills, and gain a better understanding of design from industry professionals.

Ensuring UX/UI usability standards

King’s Hawaiian’s new website was a modern redesign and they wanted to ensure it functioned as well as it looked. I conducted a comprehensive review of their new system by testing and retesting all CTAs, clickables, and user flows. I was able to verify UX, UI, and accessibility standards were being met, utilizing concepts like Jakob Nielsen’s usability heuristics and color theory.

Retouching and resizing

The King’s digital team wanted to create a fun and inviting perception when it came to their product packaging and lifestyle images. Utilizing Photoshop, I edited (shadow additions and color correction) and resized desktop and mobile assets for upload onto their new platform.

Reflection

Working on this migration project for King’s Hawaiian was an invaluable chance to implement my knowledge in a real-world setting. This opportunity gave me experience working on an e-commerce platform for a globally recognized brand, and I was able to see my contributions implemented into the live platform.

  • Perspective Taking

    • In order to find potential bugs or usability issues with the site, I had to approach the site from the perspective of an average user. Empathizing with visitors to the King’s Hawaiian site, I was able to uncover broken links, non-working CTAs, and alert the King’s digital team to other miscellaneous visual design fixes.

  • Communicating with client

    • With a brand image to uphold, communicating with the King’s Hawaiian digital team was essential. This required phone calls and video conferences to touch base and receive feedback on digital design work - this included work for retouching images, conducting the UX/UI usability review, SEO Optimization, and copywriting for blog post.

  • Real-world application

    • Getting the chance to take the skills I learned in school and apply it to a real-world project, further highlighted the importance of UX Design in the workplace. It was humbling in that my User Experience/ Interface knowledge was acknowledged and sought after, as I continued to work with King’s on this project - especially because their in-house digital team lacked the skillset.
